Did you know that your laundry soap (no matter the brand) actually leaves behind an imperceptible residue on all your clothes? That’s why we are so worried about all the bad chemicals in laundry detergents! Enter phthalates (pronounced THAL-ates); by far one of the worst chemicals found in products today. Phthalates are esters of phthalic acid that are used mainly as plasticizers, but are used for many other applications as well. What exactly makes phthalates so bad for you?
Here are some examples:
- After exposure to phthalates, pregnant mothers were 2-3 times more likely to have a child with hypospadias, a reproductive birth defect in baby boys.
- In 2009, a study found that girls exposed to phthalates to be one of the environmental causes of early puberty in girls.
- Phthalates have been associated with anti-androgenic effects in humans, including decreased testosterone levels. Low testosterone in adult males have also been associated with increased prevalence of obesity, insulin resistance, and diabetes, according to a 2007 study.
Additionally, phthalates have been found to have adverse effects on the male reproductive system including decreased sperm count, malformation of the penis, undescended testes, and infertility.
There’s more bad news still. Remember how I said phthalates were “plasticizers”? Well a plasticizer is an additive in plastic that helps soften it. Ever noticed how, over time, plastic things tend to harden up? That’s from phthalates leaching out of the plastic, and this leaching happens slowly but constantly. Why is that a problem? Well, a few companies have already come out with “phthalate-free” soaps, but even though the soap is phthalate-free, the bottle isn’t! This means over time, the same phthalates you tried to avoid have leached into your laundry detergent. Additionally, these same “phthalate-free” soaps probably weren’t even phthalate-free to begin with, because the fragrances in those soaps also contain phthalates!
But, fear not, because Rustic Strength’s Laundry Detergent uses a fragrance-free, and of course phthalate-free detergent inside of a BPA certified phthalate-free recyclable bottle.
If you’d like to learn more about the dangers of phthalates, you can read the studies that I mentioned in the article, which are here…
Sulfates (also spelled sulphates) are esters of sulfuric acid. And this is true, but [...]
