Parabens: Harsh Cancer-Causing Chemicals

Preservatives are bad. You know that, I know that, and most people know that preservatives are bad. But, when you think of preservatives you probably think of the ones in food, whereas I’m talking about preservatives in things like your laundry detergent. That’s right; all of the preservatives you try so hard to avoid in food are also in your laundry detergent! And, to add insult to injury, the preservatives in laundry detergent are much worse for you than the ones in your food! But what are these preservatives I speak of? Well, you’ve probably heard the word before; parabens. Parabens are esters of parahydroxybenzoic acid that act as a preservative for many household products like deodorant, shaving creams, and, of course, laundry detergent. But what exactly makes these parabens so bad? Well to start, they are bad enough that the EU (European Union) actually banned use of these products on young children because of the serious health risks they can impose. The main reason these paraben containing products were banned in the EU is because parabens disrupt the endocrine system which could cause major developmental issues during the onset of puberty. Along those same lines, once parabens are in the bloodstream they are mistaken for estrogen, which in turn can decrease muscle mass and produce excess body fat. A 2008 study found that 99% of breast-cancer patients also had paraben deposits found in tissue samples taken from them. We also don’t understand the long term effects of parabens yet, so potentially even worse issues could arise over time with frequent exposure to these chemicals. If you are interested in more information about the effects of parabens be sure to check out the study conducted on breast-cancer patients.

And another study I found observing the effects of a lotion containing parabens on male volunteers from Denmark hoping to learn more about the health concerns of parabens.

For the health of this generation and the next, Rustic Strength’s laundry soaps are totally paraben-free to promote a chemical-free lifestyle.
