What are Phosphates?

Phosphates are inorganic compounds derived from phosphoric acid. In topical products they are used to maintain pH balance, serve as preservatives, act as chelating agents, inhibit corrosion, and enhance penetration.

What are the health concerns?

Phosphates can pose health risks, especially for individuals with kidney disease. Excessive phosphorus intake can lead to bone loss, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic health conditions.

In large amounts, phosphates can even enter the aquatic environment and cause an increase in algae and plant growth. This can lead to decreased oxygen levels in the water, which is toxic to fish and other aquatic animals.

How do I tell if my products contain phosphates?

To identify phosphates in products, check the ingredient list for terms such as:

  • Polyphosphate
  • Phosphoric Acid
  • Calcium Phosphate
  • Pyrophosphate
