What are Fillers and what are the Health Concerns?

What are Fillers?

Fillers are substances used in many household cleaning products to give them bulk and extend the product’s shelf life. Some common fillers include Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), phosphates, formaldehyde, 1,4-Dioxane, and even chlorine bleach.

Why are they bad?

  • Reduced Effectiveness: Fillers can dilute the active ingredients, reducing the overall effectiveness of the product.
  • Potential Allergies: Some fillers, like certain preservatives and synthetic waxes, can cause allergic reactions or skin irritations.
  • Clogging Pores: Ingredients like petroleum jelly can clog pores, leading to acne and blackheads.
  • Unnecessary Ingredients: Many fillers are not essential for the product's performance and are added just to increase volume or improve texture, which can be misleading for consumers.
  • Environmental Impact: The production and disposal of synthetic fillers can have negative environmental effects.

How do I know if my products contain fillers?

Here are some steps you can take to check for fillers in your products:

  • Read the Ingredient List: Look for unfamiliar or complex chemical names. Common fillers include cellulose, gelatin, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide.
  • Check for "Other Ingredients”: Some labels have a section called "Other Ingredients" or "Inactive Ingredients" where fillers are often listed.
  • Research Ingredients: If you're unsure about an ingredient, look it up online or refer to reliable sources for information on its purpose and safety.
  • Look for Minimal Ingredients: Products with fewer ingredients are less likely to contain unnecessary fillers.
  • Choose Trusted Brands: look for brands known for using minimal or no fillers in their products.

By being vigilant about ingredient lists and doing a bit of research, you can make more informed choices about the products you use. Choosing products with minimal or no fillers can help ensure you're getting the most out of the active ingredients without the potential downsides.
