What is Petroleum?

Petroleum is a naturally occurring gas, gasoline or kerosene, found beneath the earth's surface, composed mainly of hydrocarbons. It is extracted and refined into various fuels like gasoline, diesel, and kerosene, as well as other products, including petroleum jelly (Vaseline).

What are the health concerns?

Petroleum jelly if not properly refined may contain impurities such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are potentially carcinogenic. Some individuals may experience skin irritation or even have allergic reactions. Because of its moisture containing properties, dirt and oil can become trapped and cause acne. Lastly, petroleum jelly is a byproduct of the fossil fuel industry. Meaning its production can be tied to environmental issues like oil-extraction, pollution, and non-renewable resource consumption.

How do I know if my products contain petroleum?

When checking the label look key words like Mineral oil, Paraffin, or Petrolatum (petroleum jelly).
